Five ways to Prevent Roof Problems

As a homeowner in Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, or Tacoma, you are likely looking for ways to avoid problems with your roof. If you’ve been around here long enough, you know that maintenance is your best friend, but we have a few specifics to help you prevent problems with your roof.

Be on the Lookout for Leaks

Whether they are big or small, a leak in your roof is something you need to address right away. If you have a leak, find the source, and temporarily fix it with a tarp or patch, but only if it’s safe to do so.

We recommend you then call in a professional. You might think you have the leak under control, but it’s best to have someone come look at the problem to make sure it’s fixed properly.

Replace Missing Shingles

Missing shingles are an invitation for water damage. They leave your roof exposed to moisture, but also make it easier for surrounding shingles to become loose and peel away.

Annual Maintenance

We have checklists for each season on our blog. You can check out our summer maintenance blog here. But they all are very similar. You need to clean your roof, you need to clean your gutters and you need to pay attention to what’s happening on your roof.

Keep Debris off your Roof

Debris is both large and small, but both can do significant damage. First, if you have large trees on your property, make sure none of the branches lay on your roof. And make sure you keep them maintained so that large branches don’t come off during a storm and damage your roof.

Moss and leaves are smaller, but just as damaging to your roof. When wet, moss and leaves act just like a sponge and hold the water on your shingles causing them to weaken, and even allow some of that moisture to seep under the shingles.

Do yourself a favor, and keep it all off your roof.
